Video release is limited for recent Chattanooga homicides, shootings by police

After Chattanooga police recently shot and killed two people in separate incidents, the county’s district attorney released limited first-hand evidence from the shootings.

About a week after the Aug. 11 shooting of Roger Heard Jr. at a Speedway gas station on Holtzclaw Avenue, District Attorney Coty Wamp released a clip of surveillance footage showing Heard’s encounter with police.

Three weeks after the Sept. 3 shooting of David Mendez Lopez, 17, Wamp released still images from body cameras worn by officers responding to the reported domestic dispute on South Kelley Street. The images appeared to show Mendez Lopez was armed.

But requests have been denied for authorities to make public all the body-worn and in-car camera footage, 911 call audio and third-party surveillance video obtained by police for those shootings and several other recent homicides in Chattanooga.
