Georgia state Sen. Colton Moore, of Trenton, is being challenged by a longtime political advocate and small business owner in the District 53 Republican primary after his eventful first term.

Moore’s opponent, Angela Pence, condemned the incumbent’s behavior that got him kicked out of the Senate Republican caucus and banned from the floor of the state’s House of Representatives. Moore said district voters sent him to Atlanta to fight for them, and if reelected, he would continue that work despite sanctions from the establishment.

“When I ran two years ago, I made a campaign promise that I would fight for our liberties, our freedoms, and get government spending back to the proper role of government,” Moore said in a phone call. “And I have done that with, I believe, great vigor in my first term.”

District 53 includes Dade, Walker, Catoosa and Chattooga counties, as well as a northern portion of Floyd County. The Republican primary is May 21, and early voting begins Monday. The winner of the Republican primary will face Democrat Bart Alexander Bryant.
