The start of the high school football season is upon us, and to celebrate this special occasion the Times Free Press staff will, over the coming days, offer up a daily list of players to watch in the Greater Chattanooga area.

Today, we feature running backs. Here are seven of the best to catch this season (players are listed in alphabetical order):

› JaMychal Buckner, South Pittsburg

As a sophomore, he was the leading rusher on a state championship team loaded with athletic backs last season, earning all-state recognition after gaining more than 1,000 yards. Now he’s added nearly 20 pounds, bulking up to 180 pounds on his 6-foot frame, and will be counted on even more for a Pirates team dominated by youth. His blend of size and speed is rare, especially in Class 1A.

› E.J. Carter, Notre Dame
