The start of high school football season is here, and the Times Free Press is offering up a daily list of area players to watch.

In this edition, defensive backs are featured. Here are nine who are expected to stand out in 2024 (players are listed in alphabetical order).

Gowan Brown, Sequatchie County: Brown broke out last season with six interceptions — including one he returned 38 yards against eventual TSSAA Class 1A state champion South Pittsburg — and 45 tackles as a freshman for the Indians, who reached the second round of the Class 2A playoffs but hope to make an even deeper run this fall. The 5-foot-11, 150-pounder has a 35-inch vertical leap, which helps him outcompete many opposing receivers for jumpballs.

Mason Goree, Bradley Central: The Bears will look for another Goree to star in their secondary as Mason will lead the group with his brother Marcus Goree and Boo Carter now playing for the Tennessee Volunteers. A top-50 prospect within the state for college football’s current signing cycle, the 5-11, 160-pound senior is very physical, and he can play up close to the line of scrimmage because he has the speed and footwork to not let opposing receivers get by.

Makadan Griffin, Calhoun: As a sophomore, he started for a veteran team and earned all-region recognition. The 6-1, 185-pounder had a great opening game this season with seven solo tackles, three assists and an interception last week, and he is also starting at receiver this year.
