A developer planning an array of new residential and retail space in East Chattanooga won approval Monday to move ahead on two projects but withdrew a third — by far the largest — to meet further with the community.

“It’s a minor setback,” Michael Kenner, chief executive officer of MiKen Development, said in an interview after a Chattanooga-Hamilton County Regional Planning Commission meeting.

Kenner withdrew the proposal to rezone a 190-acre tract at Doolittle Street, Leann Circle and Garner Road amid opposition from more than a half dozen neighbors.

That proposal alone could see from 1,000 to 2,000 new housing units, he said, ranging from single-family homes to townhouses and multi-family construction.

“We’ll set a meeting up in the next 30 days,” the Chattanooga developer said.
