The typical Hamilton County school received a C under the formula Tennessee uses to assign letter grades to every public school.

Of the 80 Hamilton County schools ― including charter schools ― that received letter grades, 12 received A’s, 18 received B’s, 20 received C’s, 24 received D’s and six received F’s. The state released its report card data Thursday.

That breakdown includes a greater percentage of D and F schools than the distribution of letter grades across the state.

The letter grades — which were first awarded a year ago — are based on a school’s academic proficiency, overall growth and the growth of the lowest performing quartile of students. For high schools, the model also considers college and career readiness.
