With any luck, we all grow old.

And Dr. William Emendorfer and Dr. Deborah DiStefano say they want to make sure that experience is as enjoyable as it can be. In their words, they're working toward "limitless aging" — helping people live active, pain-free, and drug-free lives well into old age.

"We want the best version of you, inside and out," DiStefano said in an interview. "We want people dancing, laughing, enjoying life. And the treatments and modalities we offer here can help with that."

Until this past fall, Emendorfer operated the Norspring Cryotherapy and Rejuvenation Center at 140 W. 14th St. in downtown Chattanooga. And DiStefano, who is an aesthetic physician and ophthalmologist, conducted her practices in an office off Gunbarrel Road.

In October, Emendorfer, who retired from dentistry in 1991, and DiStefano joined practices to form the Norspring DiStefano Medspa Wellness Center.

Now, both locations operate under the same corporate umbrella and have become "one-stop shopping" in the medspa world, offering treatments they said assist clients with recovery, aesthetics, functional medicine and aging.

The downtown location will hold a grand reopening Feb. 8, with a second event at the East Brainerd location in mid-March.

"We're all going to age, but it's a question of the way we're going to age," DiStefano said. "You can have age without limits, and there is more and more scientific evidence to suggest that can be done. We don't want people to be on pharmaceuticals in the end."

Norspring was founded in 2017, with one service, cryotherapy, where clients spend short intervals in a freezing chamber using 100% oxygenated air. But the center has grown steadily since then, now offering treatments like red light therapy, pulsed electromagnetic field therapy, hyperbaric therapy, acupuncture, compression and medical massage.

Since DiStefano has joined the team, it has also added services like facials, Botox, laser treatments, hair restoration, hormone replacement and intravenous hydration therapies.

While the medspa services aren't covered by insurance, Emendorfer and DiStefano advocate for taking a proactive approach.

"People only seek health care when they have to," DiStefano said. "But here, we don't want you to get sick. We want to halt that, so that people aren't living with these chronic conditions in the first place."

The medspa also works to address weight management. It's become common practice for physicians to prescribe pharmaceuticals to help patients drop pounds, "and that's fine," Emendorfer said. "But here, we work on diet and exercise, understanding nutrition, group support and changing behaviors."

There's a saying he repeats to himself a lot: "You can either die slow or die fast." And, as for himself, Emendorfer said he hopes to live a long, healthy life and be in the "die fast" category.

"Our philosophy is about helping people who want to be healthy and age gracefully," he said. "We want people to live well until they die, not have a chronic disease that takes them down slowly throughout the last decades of their life."

As we grow older in this culture, Emendorfer said, we tend to accept a "new normal" — that life is to be low-energy and painful.

"We think those things, feeling bad and tired, are normal," he said. "But they don't have to be."
