Then: Hamilton County public schools had hundreds of fire code violations in November 2022 that had remained unaddressed for years, according to Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office inspection reports obtained by the Chattanooga Times Free Press.

According to state records, repeat violations for 2022 occurred in 14 school buildings. Some violations dated back to 2019.

At the time, Superintendent Justin Robertson said he would soon meet with the State Fire Marshal’s Office to present the district’s plan to address the violations. A procedure to correct fire code issues had not been well established until recently, he said.

He said the fire code violations reflect the district’s overall lack of facilities funding and resources and would likely cost “hundreds of thousands” to correct.
