Hamilton County General Sessions Judge Alex McVeagh is a self-described stickler for the rules who hopes to continue applying the law without bias as the county’s newest Circuit Court judge.
“You will not hear me campaigning on the sanctity of marriage, and you will not hear me campaigning on certain values,” McVeagh said. “My job is not for me to tell you I’m going to be a pro-life judge.”
He added, “As a Christian conservative, and a lifelong Republican, I have strongly held personal and political views; however, judges and judicial candidates are prohibited from campaigning on certain political issues under the law, to prevent judges from legislating their own political beliefs from the bench.”
McVeagh, 37, and Chattanooga attorney Michele Coffman are both seeking the Republican nomination in the race to replace former Circuit Court Judge Marie Williams in the county’s third division. Early in-person voting starts Feb. 14 and runs through Feb. 27. The primary election is set for March 5.
