Questions are being asked about the business practices and best use of Rossville recreation facilities, while some community members have praised the management for providing much-needed activities for local youth.
At its Monday meeting, the Rossville City Council will address the Rossville Recreation Association, a nonprofit group that manages the Rossville ball fields and Rossville Athletic Center gym. The issue was made public at the May 9 meeting of the Walker County Commission.
During open comments at the meeting, resident Melissa Hulsey said she thinks too many of the activities at the Rossville facilities involve for-profit ventures that are crowding out what should be used for children whose families cannot afford select teams.
“Recreation is key for our youth,” Hulsey said. “The benefits of competing in team sports last our entire lifetime. No one wants to take away the recreational opportunities. We the taxpayers just want to ensure that proper management of county resources is in place.”
