State maintenance and bridge repair workers are on site and are actively repairing the patch, said Beth Emmons, spokesperson for the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
“The work is going to take several hours as once they pour the concrete it must have time to cure,” Emmons said in an email.
The damage that appeared around 4 a.m. Wednesday caused all westbound traffic to come to a near-standstill for much of the morning, with the two left lanes of the interstate blocked off, according to the agency. Photos show damage on the traffic side on top, as well as the bridge decking underneath.
At 10 a.m., westbound traffic on I-24 was backed up through the I-24/Interstate 75 interchange but still moving slowly. Emmons said motorists should check the state’s SmartWay map for updates.
