A funny thing happened to the Tennessee Volunteers on their way to this weekend’s College World Series championship series at Charles Schwab Field Omaha.

They didn’t have to play much.

The top-seeded Vols will go from this past Sunday night’s 6-1 win over No. 4 North Carolina to Saturday night’s best-of-three opener against No. 3 Texas A&M with only having to play one time. The lone occasion, of course, was Wednesday afternoon’s 7-2 downing of No. 8 Florida State that clinched Tennessee’s first trip to the title series since 1951.

“It’s weird, because you’re used to playing three and having a day off before a Tuesday game,” Tennessee junior second baseman and leadoff hitter Christian Moore told reporters after Wednesday’s win. “I guess it’s good for the body, but I like playing. We’ll just take another two days off and get ready for the series.”

The Vols (58-12) and Aggies (52-13) are scheduled for a 7:30 Eastern first pitch on ESPN. The Aggies clinched their spot in the finals with Wednesday night’s 6-0 blanking of Florida, which followed Monday night’s 5-1 defeat of No. 2 Kentucky.
