New leadership has been chosen to oversee Rossville’s recreation program, as Walker County and Rossville officials work on agreements for management of recreation facilities.

The Rossville City Council voted on the plan Monday, a week after canceling the recreation contract with the Rossville Athletic Association, a nonprofit organization that ran programming at the city’s ball fields and the county’s gym and football field.

“We made the best decision for the city as quickly as we could,” Jonathan Lassetter, city council member, said of the decision to choose new leadership.

Roberto Rodriguez will be the city’s new parks and recreation director, Lassetter said in a phone call.

A former code enforcement officer, Rodriguez was given a lateral transfer to save the time needed for a broader search, Lassetter said, adding the city’s priority is reopening signups for football and cheerleading. After that, he said, a game plan will be developed for the role.
