Tariffs are taxes and more letters to the editors

Tariffs are taxes; think before voting!

Only a few more days until the election, and there is so much that could be commented on. Of Trump’s many ridiculous statements, I want to focus on his idea of imposing tariffs, which he claims the foreign countries exporting products to the U.S. will pay.

It’s the same kind of statement he made in a previous campaign that Mexico would pay for the wall. How did that work out? So now he claims that China will pay tariffs on their products coming into this country. One can easily Google the effects of tariffs. They are not paid by the producing country. Tariffs are imposed once the product arrives in this country, and then the price is passed on to consumers. A form of taxation.

He makes lots of inaccurate statements to appeal to uninformed voters who will swallow anything he says. Don’t believe what he says without looking deeper and think before voting.

GOP’er says party has lost its soul

I have voted Republican around 90% of the time in my 50-plus-year voting life. To me, integrity and character are important traits for a candidate to have before they get my vote. Trump has neither.

1. Trump was convicted of 34 different felonies by a jury.

2. Trump incited an insurrection to overturn a valid election and did nothing for hours while the mob tried to find and hang his vice president.

3. Trump’s foundation and Trump University were shut down.

4. The twice-impeached Trump lies far more than he tells the truth.

I feel that the Republican Party lost some of its heart when Newt Gingrich came to power as speaker, it lost its mind when Trump was elected in 2016, and it lost its soul when it still supported Trump after Jan. 6. Integrity matters.

Signal Mountain Send Jack Allen to represent us

On Aug. 10 of this year, I wrote to Rep. Chuck Fleischmann with a simple request. Agreeing wholeheartedly with the statement posted on his website that “It should be our number one priority to ensure that all Americans have faith in the integrity of our elections,” I asked him to either post proof of the widespread election fraud (“concerns” of which, purportedly expressed by some of his constituents, had led him to vote against certifying the electoral college count on Jan. 6, 2021) or declare openly that no such proof exists.

I have not received a reply to my letter, nor seen on his website anything approaching proof or denial of election fraud. Does he benefit in some way from perpetuating doubt about election integrity among ill-informed voters? Perhaps other items have since become more important to him. Certainly, he has been busy securing funding for the lock, as noted by Clint Cooper in his damning-with-faint-praise Free Press endorsement of Fleischmann.

Perhaps we who have traditionally voted Republican should consider whether Jack Allen would be able to address the matter more effectively. He could do no worse.
