A U.S. Marshal shot and killed a man in Chattanooga after the the individual reportedly caught and dragged the marshal with his car, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

The marshal shot Samuel Story, 44, on Tuesday as he backed up his vehicle while marshals tried to stop him from leaving an apartment complex on North Germantown Road, the TBI said in a news release.

Marshals from the Smokey Mountain Fugitive Task Force went to the complex looking for a wanted person, according to the release.

While marshals were interviewing people there, two men, including Story, were trying to leave in a car, and there was a confrontation, the TBI said.

Marshals tried to stop them from leaving, but Story backed up the car, according to the release.

“A marshal was caught between the door of the vehicle and was being dragged,” the TBI said in its release.

The marshal then shot Story, who died after being taken to a hospital. The marshal was also taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

The marshal involved has not been named.

A representative of the U.S. Marshals office in Chattanooga declined to answer questions about the shooting when reached by phone Wednesday and referred questions to the TBI, given the ongoing investigation.

Susan Niland, a spokesperson for the TBI, declined to answer questions by email.
