Here are the five biggest surprises from last week’s high school football action from across the Greater Chattanooga area:

1. Ashton Martin’s relentless pursuit

Leading one of only two defenses in the state that has yet to allow a point this season, Ashton Martin has been spectacular at outside linebacker for Class 2A’s second-ranked Marion County. After impressing last season with eight sacks accounting for half of his tackles for loss, the 5-foot-8, 175-pounder has already recorded 11 tackles for loss and seven sacks through three games.

The Warriors defense has played at a state championship caliber and is solid at all three levels. Martin’s tenacious D has helped elevate his team to a level that has only been matched by Class 6A’s Maryville, which also has three shutouts in as many games.

“Ashton is a great kid who plays with a great motor and purpose,” Marion County defensive coordinator Robert Flowers said. “There is no way to overstate his importance. He is a game changer.”
