The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football team stepped back out of Southern Conference play Saturday night and got its first win of the season after an 0-3 start, beating Portland State 45-30 at Finley Stadium.

The Vikings, who compete in the Big Sky Conference and have yet to play at home this season, were headed back to Oregon at 0-4 against the most different schedule in the country among Football Championship Subdivision programs, according to the Massey computer ratings.

UTC beat writer Gene Henley breaks down the win for the Mocs, the preseason SoCon favorites who are 0-1 in the conference and return to league action next Saturday by visiting East Tennessee State University (3-2, 1-0) for a 3:30 p.m. matchup in Johnson City.
