Ethan Uhorchuk has solidified his legacy as one of the top prep wrestlers to come out of Chattanooga.
Uhorchuk concluded his high school career at Signal Mountain with a program record 275 career wins as he became the first public school wrestler in TSSAA history and fourth overall to win five state titles this past February.
This past weekend at Virginia Beach, the lighting-quick Uhorchuk crossed off a major milestone as he won the NHSCA High School Nationals in his senior 132-pound bracket, where he outscored his opposition 84-16 over six matches.
He joined his younger brother, JoJo Uhorchuk, Bradley Central’s Dewontae McMillon and Christian Heritage’s Harrison Murdock as Chattanooga-area NHSCA national champions.
Ethan Uhorchuk won all 52 of his TSSAA matches by bonus points this season, while his 3-1 semifinals and 5-0 finals decision victory on his way to his first national championship were his only matches this season that came down to a decision.
“To finally push through the door and cap off my season on top at the national stage was special,” said Uhorchuk, who will wrestle for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga this upcoming fall. “This was a season to remember. My brother and I wrestled with the intent to dominate people. For us to combine for a 100-0 record at Signal and then both finish on top at nationals is something we will always remember.”
JoJo Uhorchuk won his third straight NHSCA national championship as he dominated with a 12-1 major decision in his junior 120-pound finals matchup. JoJo was ranked the No. 3 high school wrestler in the country at 120 this past season and went 48-0 for the Eagles on his way to winning his third TSSAA state title.
“The end goal for my brother and I both is to become an NCAA champion,” said JoJo, who recently committed to Army, where his two oldest brothers Caleb and Daniel wrestle for Kevin Ward. “Wrestling with Ethan one last time was awesome. Our brothers really helped pave the way for us and we have really benefited by watching them and learning from them and working hard all the time. We love going out on the mat and trying to score points.”
Bradley Central freshman heavyweight McMillon became the first national champion in school history.
McMillon, who started on the offensive and defensive line for the Bears on the football field this past fall, paved the way to history by winning all four of his matchups by decisions at Virginia Beach. He won 11-8 in the finals while landing a pair of 6-1 victories in the Round of 16 and the semifinals along with an 11-4 quarterfinal decision.
Murdock, who won a NHSCA middle school championship a year ago, was the 152-pound freshman champion, doing so in dominating fashion. After going undefeated during the prep season and winning a GHSA individual title for Christian Heritage, he outscored his six opponents 106-15 at Virginia Beach. Murdock won all six of his matches, including the title bout, by technical fall.
Meanwhile, Soddy Daisy had a pair of NHSCA All-American (eighth-place or better) finishes as senior back-to-back heavyweight state champion Jonathan Davis placed fifth at 285 while junior Braylan Cosper was seventh at 138.
Also earning All-American status was Southeast Whitfield senior Olli Webb at 132 pounds, who finished fifth, Gordon Lee sophomore Noah Brown, who finished seventh at 113 pounds, and Ringgold senior Jaxon Delgado, who was eighth at 152 pounds. Each was also a GHSA individual champion this season.
