Elon Musk, everyone’s least favorite among a cadre of deeply unpopular billionaires imposing undue influence over a second President Donald Trump administration, has made his foray into Nashville’s local political scene.
Mirroring a similar project in Las Vegas, Musk’s The Boring Co. has the go-ahead from Gov. Bill Lee and the GOP-supermajority controlled state government to construct an underground tunnel, exclusively for Musk’s Tesla vehicles, to transport traffic from the Nashville airport to an unspecified location downtown.
At a launch event in July announcing the venture, Gov. Lee lavished the project with praise, saying the tunnel “will transform the way people travel from the airport to downtown Nashville.”
Of course, as identified by many, there are a host of issues with this tunnel, dubbed the “Music City Loop.” As reported by the Nashville Banner, the ground beneath the city is made primarily of soluble rock like limestone, making the topography prone to sinkholes and caves.
The Boring Co. also has, to put it modestly, a subpar track record with these tunnels. Aside from the project in Las Vegas, other ones in places like Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and Chicago fizzled out once the public insisted on environmental studies.
