Plans to operate a transitional home for young adults coming out of foster care are uncertain after planning commissioners recommended denying a permit Monday.

Broken Healer Home applied to rezone an East Brainerd house to the county’s agricultural zone, the only category that allows group homes and halfway houses.

“In my mind, it might not be appropriate for this neighborhood,” planning commission member Barry Payne said. “It’s certainly something the county ought to get behind, to find a place to make this vision come true.”

The home, which would serve residents between 18 and 25 years old, doesn’t fully fit the possibly outdated “halfway house” classification, but it would have a similar use, said Bryan Shults, development director for the Regional Planning Agency.
