An elementary school teacher in Sequatchie County, Tennessee, has been arrested on an assault charge after allegedly striking a student, according to Sheriff Bill Phillips.

Sequatchie County deputies were notified Tuesday of an alleged assault involving a student at Griffith Elementary School, Phillips said in an emailed statement. He identified the teacher as Holly Condra, 54, of Dunlap.

“Upon investigation, investigators learned that teacher Holly Condra had physically assaulted a student with her hand,” Phillips said. “There was no report or indication of any need for medical attention.”

After completing interviews and reviewing video footage, Phillips said, investigators booked Condra on a warrant charging her with assault. Condra turned herself in on Wednesday and was released under a $2,500 bond.

A working phone number for Condra could not be found, and she didn’t immediately respond to a social media message seeking comment.

In a copy of a letter emailed Aug. 14 to school parents and staff, Sequatchie County Director of Schools Sarai Pierce said Condra has been terminated from her position “due to a violation of school district policy regarding interactions with a student. We believe this was a one-time, isolated occurrence. Even so, we expect employees to show the greatest respect to all students all the time.”

Pierce declined to provide more details because the investigation is a personnel matter and is ongoing. She included a message for people who work for or want to work for the school system: “If we can’t trust you, you can’t work here.”
