Hamilton County Schools is exploring a partnership to create affordable housing for district teachers and staff.

Under the proposal, the school system would lease district-owned land to Chattanooga Neighborhood Enterprise to build around 70 housing units that would be available to any Hamilton County Schools employee, Superintendent Justin Robertson told school board members Monday.

Chattanooga Neighborhood Enterprise, a nonprofit housing development organization, would build and manage the units, Robertson said, and other than leasing the land, the project would require no investment from the district.

The concept is in its early stages, and an agreement would need to be approved by the Hamilton County school board later on to move forward.
