Chattanooga is looking at purchasing land at the defunct Quarry golf course, with a possible parks project at the base of Walden’s Ridge.

The golf course sits off of Mountain Creek Road. The question of what should be built there has been a subject of debate among city officials, with an apartment project there killed by the Chattanooga City Council in 2021. Now, the city is in the preliminary stages of trying to buy several acres of the land with a state grant for recreational use.

The grant, worth about $1.7 million, would go toward both the purchase of the land and revitalizing the property as an outdoor resource, Brian Smith, spokesperson for the city’s Parks and Outdoor Department, said in a text message.

The land the city is trying to buy includes a parking lot and the golf course’s old clubhouse, according to council member Chip Henderson of Lookout Valley. Based on what he’s heard, the city is mulling whether to use the clubhouse or not — it’s in a state of disrepair, he said in an interview.
