Q. What musical legend played before a small crowd here in February 1985?

A. Liberace drew a crowd of about 2,000 for his show at the Memorial Auditorium on Feb. 3, 1985. So what caused “people to stay away in droves?” Mother Nature. Or more precisely, a snow scare, according to the next day’s edition of the Chattanooga News-Free Press.

But while the snow never showed, Liberace did, and he delivered for his fans.

Those who weren’t deterred by the weather forecast “were treated with Mr. Showmanship’s finest efforts — lots of good music, lots of talented support guests and lots and lots of wonderful costumes that he seems to enjoy showing off as much as the audience enjoys seeing,” Entertainment Editor June Hatcher wrote in her concert review.
