Chattanooga has the highest rate of reported shoplifting incidents per capita in the United States, a study from a national think tank found.

Between 2018 and 2024, the city reported 89.8 incidents per 100,000 people, according to research from the Council on Criminal Justice.

This year, shoplifting incidents have gone down around 5% from 2023, data from the Chattanooga Police Department shows.

More than 40% of incidents in Chattanooga were reported at one of five area Walmart stores, data shows.

The Walmart in Lookout Valley had the highest volume of shoplifting reports between January 2022 and the end of 2024, reporting 689 incidents that made up 10.3% of reports in Chattanooga during that time.
