Coaching carousel spun few changes for area prep football programs

The prep football coaching carousel barely spun during the past offseason.

After averaging double-digit changes atop the coaching staffs of the nearly 50 programs across the Chattanooga area the past five years, this offseason has only contained two head-coaching changes among area Tennessee teams — Cleveland and Ooltewah — and two more in Georgia — Dalton and Heritage.

Cleveland brought in former Red Bank head coach Chris Brown, who had been the defensive coordinator for Baylor the last three seasons, while Ooltewah named McMinn Central’s Matt Moody to oversee its program.

The only other coaching news among local TSSAA teams came when Central removed the interim tag from Glen Carter, who took over the program just weeks before last season kicked off. Carter guided the Purple Pounders to the second round of the Class 3A playoffs and was rewarded by officially taking over at a school where he had worked as an assistant for two decades.

In the Peach State, Heritage promoted longtime assistant Jeremy New to take over when E.K. Slaughter stepped down after more than a decade of success, while Dalton tabbed Chris Prewett as its first new coach in more than 70 years who has no previous ties to the program.
