Two fire chiefs with the name
Terry Knowles is at least the second person with his surname to serve as Chattanooga’s fire chief in recent years.
Mayor Tim Kelly named the department’s assistant chief of special operations to the top post earlier this week. In 1976, Joe Knowles was named fire chief, serving in that position until 1984.
Hamilton County Clerk Bill Knowles, the brother of Joe Knowles, said he is unaware of any relation of his family to the new fire chief.
The longtime county clerk said he’d had inquiries about whether the two were related.
