Samantha Hyatte could have thrown a rock and hit the Tennessee state line, she said. She doesn’t fully remember barging into a stranger’s home wielding hedge clippers but has time to try during her 30-year sentence in Georgia.
“Nobody got hurt. The door was not kicked in,” Hyatte said by phone from Lee Arrendale State Prison in North Georgia. “I didn’t touch anybody, and I didn’t take anything.”
It’s unclear what exactly led to Hyatte entering the residence of two women, then aged 66 and 60, on Feb. 24, 2024, or how she became in possession of hedge clippers that day.
Hyatte, 37, said she remembers being in a physical altercation with someone, being injured and looking frantically for a ride.
While Hyatte is bipolar, she said, she is unsure this incident was part of a mental health episode, as she was high on drugs at the time.
