Keep WTCI, PBS for diversity of voices and more letters to the editors

Keep WTCI, PBS for diversity of voices

I am writing this letter in support of the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) and our local member station WTCI-TV. One can argue the merits of spending cuts and whose ox should be gored. This letter is to state the need for strong local broadcasters like WTCI-TV.

Because a handful of companies control the majority of local broadcast stations in the United States, the emphasis is on operational efficiency at the cost of local diversity of voice. Simply, it is more efficient for a company to repurpose news stories from one market to another. This allows them to have fewer personnel covering local issues in each of their markets, thus saving money.

The second issue is cable news outlets craft their news presentation to appeal to a certain demographic. News should not be crafted to appeal to one audience or another. That is not news. That is an echo chamber.

Give PBS and member stations like WTCI-TV the resources they need to present a variety of ideas into the marketplace, not just the ideas of those leading our country at the time. We are a better country when we have a diversity of voices presented fairly and equally.

It’s not too late for changes, is it?

In America, in the year 2025, it’s now compassionate and God’s will to take away from the poorest and give to the wealthiest? This is obviously the direction we’re going toward under the current corrupt administration (which Christians overwhelmingly selected).

I know it’s not productive being cynical, but in today’s Trumpian environment, not caring and just ignoring seems to be the way. We now have a majority of politicians who do not seem to care about the vast majority of their constituents and who want to concentrate all of their efforts on an extremely select and elite few.

It’s all so highly disturbing, troubling, completely unfair and unjust. Having grown up in this country where I managed to find a fairly comfortable level of success and satisfaction, I can’t help but to want the same for everyone else. No one individual should be in a position of unlimited resources and power such that they can determine who lives and who dies and who thrives and who fails.

I have to believe it’s not too late to make the changes. Or I’m I just being foolish?

Current Republicans haven’t done ‘squat’

I would like to thank state Rep. Greg Vital for his commentary on how wonderful Republicans have been for conservation. Lincoln, T. Roosevelt and even Nixon would not be seen as Republicans in this MAGA age. They would be considered “woke” by the extreme right of today.

Mr. Vital must not have read any of the “Big Beautiful Bill” passed by the House and now being considered by the Senate. There are too many things really destructive about the BBB, so I’ll stick to Mr. Vital’s commentary.

The BBB is going to make drastic cuts to the EPA. That department has done great work cleaning up our land, air and making rules to follow so greed won’t destroy our country. People will not clean up after themselves if that effort will dip into their profits.

The BBB is also going to dismantle wetland protections. The bill has provisions for the government to sell millions of acres to mining, drilling and logging operations. There are also provisions to deregulate clean water laws.

Mr. Vital, the Republican Party has not, as you proclaim, done squat to support the environment, help in conservation of our natural resources or protect what we have.

In fact, MAGA is doing the opposite.
