The Walden Mayor and Board of Alderman has given initial approval to the rezoning of a 15-acre property on Taft Highway, where a development of 42 townhomes is proposed, by a 2-1 vote.
A second vote on the rezoning will be held in April, when the public again will have the opportunity to comment, Mayor Lee Davis said at the meeting last week where initial approval was granted.
Bill Raines Jr., president of Chattanooga real estate investment company The Raines Group, requested the property at 2315 Taft Highway be rezoned from single-family residential to town center residential. The zoning designation was established in the town’s land use plan adopted in 2022 that allows for higher-density residential development in the center of town.
The proposed development, known as The Walden at Fairmount, includes 42 one- and two-story, three bedroom townhomes and about 9 acres of green space.
Raines said by phone those who voted in favor of the rezoning request “realized there’s a tremendous void on Signal Mountain” for such housing.
