After more than 100 days of a second Donald Trump presidency, the Democratic Party has yet to reach a consensus explaining its electoral loss. For some Democrats, they’ve looked at one group in particular to cast blame: trans people.

As is the habit among many within Democratic leadership, polling is used as an oversized justification to inform this political thinking.

Trump’s latest approval numbers illustrate the anti-trans position taken by the broader public. While failing to achieve majority approval on any other issue, a CNN poll found the president to have a 51% approval when it comes to his policies related to gender identity and trans people.

Some of these policies that a slight majority of Americans seemingly lend approval to include: recognizing only two, unchanging genders; ordering the relocation of trans women in custody to men’s prisons; and banning trans athletes from women’s college sports.
