Jim Irwin, the Atlanta developer guiding the rebirth of the former U.S. Pipe and Wheland foundries into the Foundries District, has become an owner of the giant structure at the heart of the site.

The longtime local owners of the Southside Chattanooga foundry site brought Irwin and his development group, New City Properties, in as co-owners of the building, nicknamed the Shed.

Pipe Properties, the group that owns the U.S. Pipe site, created a joint venture with New City Properties in February called South Broad Shed LLC. Pipe Properties transferred ownership of the building to the joint venture in March, according to property records.

The imposing former U.S. Pipe facility runs perpendicular to the new Chattanooga Lookouts stadium and is a central target for historic reuse. Thousands of U.S. Pipe workers poured molten metal into molds in the building for more than a century before the foundry closed in 2006.
