The Tennessee Valley Authority expects the amount of electricity used by data centers in its region to double by 2030, CEO Don Moul told investors Tuesday on a quarterly financial call.

Data processing and storage climbed to 18% of TVA’s industrial power use in 2025, Moul said. The federally owned utility generates electricity used by more than 10 million people and businesses in seven states, split between 40% residential use and 60% industrial use.

The region includes virtually all of Tennessee, large parts of North Alabama and Mississippi and smaller pieces of Kentucky, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia.

Data centers account for 15% of TVA’s large industrial power load, a classification for facilities that use more than 5 megawatts, roughly enough electricity for 3,000 homes at once. Some large-scale artificial intelligence data centers use hundreds of megawatts.
