Tennessee has transferred more people from its jails into Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody in recent months than almost any other state in the country.
Only Texas, California and Florida, the country’s three most populous states, had more transfers than Tennessee, which is the 15th most populous state.
Between May 21 and Oct. 15, ICE took custody of more than 2,750 people transferred from Tennessee jails and other detention facilities, according to a December report by the Prison Policy Initiative, a nonpartisan advocacy group.
The report said some 988 others detained by ICE in Tennessee were arrested at other locations like their homes, places of work or at court hearings.
Data released in the summer showed Tennessee had the second-highest transfer rate of jail transfers to ICE custody in the country, behind only Texas.
