For 30 years, Circuit City was a leading consumer electronics retailer in Chattanooga, until competition and the Great Recession pushed the chain into Chapter 7 bankruptcy in 2009.

With locations in Hixson, Brainerd and the Hamilton Place mall area, the Richmond, Virginia-based chain owned several of Chattanooga’s go-to stores for TVs, appliances and stereo gear from the late 1970s until the 2000s.

The first mention of Circuit City in Chattanooga’s newspapers came on July 4, 1978, when the Chattanooga News-Free Press published a story under the headline: “Wards to Open Two Circuit City Retail Electronics Stores Here.”
