Walker Valley boys’ basketball coach Will Campbell firmly believes his team has one of the most talented guard trios in Tennessee high school hoops right now.
After going 30-5 and reaching the TSSAA Class 4A quarterfinals last season, the Mustangs appear even more dangerous this winter with senior point guard Ashton Davis leading a backcourt that includes his brother, junior Zach Davis, and Turner Clayton, another senior.
MaxPreps.com has Walker Valley (14-1) ranked as the No. 8 boys’ basketball team in the state, regardless of classification, while Campbell’s squad was No. 3 in Class 4A when the first USA Today/Tennessee Sports Writers Association poll of the season was released Monday.
In an up-tempo attack that prioritizes quick ball movement, Ashton has helped set the tone on both ends of the court with per-game averages of 3.5 steals and five-plus assists, while Zach leads the team with his 21-point average and Turner is at 18-plus points per game.
“Ashton is critical to what we do,” said Campbell, whose son Blake became a college standout after prep stardom at Walker Valley. “He lets Zach and Turner play off the ball more and get in their bag offensively. I don’t know if there is a better trio of guards in the state on the same team. That would be hard to find.
