State Rep. Yusuf Hakeem, D-Chattanooga, is demanding answers from the Tennessee Department of Education about the state’s partnership with Turning Point USA, the organization founded by the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

The state last month announced the partnership, which aims to implement Club America chapters, student-led affiliate groups of Turning Point USA, at every high school in the state.

“My concerns are not rooted in opposition to civic engagement or student participation,” Hakeem wrote in a letter sent Wednesday to Tennessee Education Commissioner Lizzette Reynolds, “but rather in the process, transparency and broader implications this partnership raises for public education.”
