Even before he was known simply by his initials, the initial impression of David Gabriel Georges remains a vivid memory.
Two years ago, around this same point on the calendar, Gabriel Georges — who had just arrived on the Baylor School campus from Quebec — made his public debut in Chattanooga.
While preparing for the annual prep tour — the whirlwind road trip where I visit as many area schools as possible on the first day teams can practice in full pads — Baylor head coach Erik Kimrey was downright giddy when asked if he had any new players to watch for when I stopped by Heywood Stadium.
“We’ve got an offensive lineman that won’t be hard to spot because he’s 6-foot-8, 320 pounds,” Kimrey said, referring to Gabe Osenda, a future all-state left tackle that would eventually earn a five-star recruiting rating and sign with Tennessee.
