Concrete repairs started June 5 on Interstate 24 east over Chattanooga’s Missionary Ridge will continue a week longer than planned because of a delay caused by rain.
The repairs stem from deterioration of the existing concrete on the eastbound side, according to state transportation agency spokesperson Rae Anne Bradley. The work zone is near the crest of the ridge, a bit west of the Germantown Road exit. The old concrete is buckled and broken in several locations in the two right lanes.
What had been a three-day work period, June 5-8, was cut a day short after more than 0.8 inches of rain fell June 7, according to National Weather Service records. Transportation officials had to do some rescheduling.
“Crews completed a portion of the concrete repairs on I-24 East in Hamilton County last weekend, repairing approximately 160 feet of concrete pavement beginning under the South Crest Road bridge,” Bradley said Friday by email. “Work will continue this weekend, with crews picking up where they left off and moving east toward the Germantown Road exit.”
Crews can work during rain if it’s safe, she said. The weather service forecast calls for a sunny sky Saturday with a good chance of showers and thunderstorms returning Saturday night and Sunday.
