What’s so scandalous about efficiency?

I was startled to see the first sentence in the Times editorial (6/2). It read: “The latest governing philosophy coming from the political right is the notion that government … should, to save taxpayer dollars, function in the most efficient way possible.”

(READ: Times Opinion: There’s nothing efficient about Weston Wamp’s county government)

Along with the editorial writer, I too am scandalized by the idea of an efficient government. Whoever heard of such a thing? Think of all of the jobs that might be lost if the government were efficient. Fortunately, the Times editorial page supports just the right people to perpetuate government inefficiency, and, why not say it, fraud and abuse, that we’ve all come to know and love.

Reader disturbed by doctor’s role in crash

Reading the testimony of Dr. McGinty about the terrible accident on Frazier Avenue is troubling. The driver of the van stared at him and that scared him so much he was almost sick? Seriously? All the doctor had to do was back off and wait a few minutes. Instead he raced off from the red light, possibly inciting the van driver to act accordingly.

Seems to me that something is rotten in Denmark.
