A man died Thursday, days after crashing into a wall at the Missionary Ridge Tunnels on McCallie Avenue, police said.

Police responded to the single-vehicle crash and subsequent fire just before 7 p.m. Monday, according to a Chattanooga Police Department press release. Witnesses had moved the driver, later identified as 28-year-old Marki Bonner, away from the vehicle. Hamilton County EMS transported him to a hospital with critical injuries.

A preliminary investigation showed Bonner’s Toyota Camry was traveling east toward the tunnels when he lost control, the press release said. The vehicle left the road, struck the wall of the tunnel and caught fire.

The Hamilton County Medical Examiner’s Office notified the Police Department at 7:30 p.m. Thursday that Bonner died.

An investigation continues, and police ask anyone with information about the incident to call 423-698-2525.
