Two Chattanooga agencies will receive funds stemming from a decade-old Volkswagen settlement that will boost the use of renewable vehicles.
Tennessee will distribute almost $19 million to 22 projects statewide intended to replace eligible medium- and heavy-duty automobiles with alternate-fuel and all-electric vehicles. EPB, the city’s electric utility, and CARTA, the local transit agency, are among the recipients.
In a press release, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation said the 22 projects will involve replacing 81 vehicles with 35 all-electric, 33 propane, eight hybrid and five compressed natural gas automobiles. The effort will also support the installation of associated charging infrastructure for EVs.

The money comes from a settlement Volkswagen reached about 10 years ago when it admitted to duping diesel emissions tests.
