Soddy-Daisy city commissioners unanimously approved a request to rezone property at 130 Shearer St. from agricultural to manufacturing for a proposed pipe fabrication shop.
Commissioners added a condition that a privacy fence be added between the fabrication shop property and the neighboring home at 124 Shearer St. The vote was Thursday.
Resident Jim Collins asked commissioners if the rezoning of the property, which borders the city’s industrial park, would be a de facto expansion of the industrial zone, and whether that aligns with the city’s comprehensive plan that’s intended to guide development.
Vice Mayor Mark Penney said his intent in voting in favor of the rezoning request was not to expand the city’s manufacturing footprint.
