Law enforcement officers were searching Friday afternoon for a Hamilton County defendant accused of murder who did not return to trial following a lunch break.

Around 2 p.m. Friday, Hamilton County Criminal Court Judge Amanda Dunn said she was informed Deangelo Dews, 31, is no longer wearing his ankle monitor.

Dews’ trial began Tuesday. He’s accused of first-degree murder and a firearm charge in connection with the April 2024 fatal shooting of Kendric Evans, 27, at the Bayberry Apartments complex in Chattanooga.

Hamilton County Pretrial Services notified Dunn at 12:46 p.m. that Dews’ ankle monitor had registered a tampering alert, she said. Ten minutes later, she was told the unit was stationary at Dews’ residence.
