Police union to appeal denial of benefits after Hamilton County deputy’s fatal crash

The family of a Hamilton County sheriff’s deputy who died following an April crash has been denied benefits, despite the Sheriff’s Office recognizing his death as occurring in the line of duty.

Deputy Landon Faulkner, 24, died in April, days after his patrol vehicle struck a disabled pickup truck’s trailer on Highway 111 in Sequatchie County. He left behind a wife and four children.

Acrisure Claims Service, which administers on-the-job injury claims for Hamilton County, sent a letter denying the claim as Faulkner was not performing his county job duties at the time of the crash, according to the letter addressed to Faulkner’s family.

“Deputy Faulkner’s accident and injuries occurred while enroute to a second job, with a different employer,” the letter said.

Faulkner was not covered under the county’s on-the-job injury policy, the letter said, and no benefits would be issued.
