The Industrial Board for the city met Tuesday to discuss construction at the Enterprise South industrial park, including updates on several projects to benefit Volkswagen.
Steve Leach, administrator of public works for the city, said the overall project is on track and on budget, and offered insight into the few remaining projects in which the city still has a hand.
The pedestrian bridge connecting Volkswagen’s training center to the assembly plant is well under way, with the majority of the bridge’s spans having been constructed in Colorado, Leach said.
Workers would begin pouring the piers to support the bridge’s 80-foot height next week, he said.
Meanwhile, Volkswagen’s finishing building, where customer requested modifications are made to vehicles before they are shipped, is about 60 percent complete, Leach said.
Workers are finishing upstairs office areas with drywall and adding HVAC equipment downstairs, he said.
“The building looks substantially built,” Leach said.
The rail projects for Volkswagen are at 80 percent completion, according to Adam Levitt, project manager for EMJ Corp.
“Basically what they’re doing is expanding the storage and capacity of what’s there already, to service Volkswagen,” Levitt said. “They’re adding more tracks and rehabbing existing tracks to make them more heavy duty rail” in the area north of Bonny Oaks Drive.
The rail loading yard is nearly complete, with a final check scheduled for today, he said.
