MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A small group of striking fast-food workers has marched on the streets of Memphis to call for higher pay, saying that better wages will help them support their families and improve the area's economy.
Seven fast-food workers were joined by about 30 civil rights activists and union members who are supporting a nationwide strike. Participating workers are asking for $15 an hour and the right to unionize without interference from employers.
The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour.
The group walked from the offices of the American Federation of Federal, State and Municipal Employees to the National Civil Rights Museum, holding brightly colored signs and chanting "Hold them burgers, hold them fries, make our wages super-size."
Workers who skipped shifts today also protested at area fast-food restaurants.
