Starting Friday, Dec. 16, Soddy-Daisy residents will be able to shop for groceries and stock up on wine for holiday parties in one stop without leaving the city limits.

Following the November passage of a referendum to allow the sale of wine in retail stores in the city, the Soddy-Daisy City Commission passed an ordinance to change the law at its Dec. 1 meeting. Like all of the city’s ordinances, it takes effect 15 days after its passing.

During the same meeting, the Food City at 1061 Dayton Pike and the Wal-Mart Supercenter at 9334 Dayton Pike were both granted certificates of compliance to sell wine in the city.

Fans of “high gravity” beer – beer that exceeds 5 percent alcohol, which includes many Belgians, stouts and India pale ales – will also be able to purchase those beverages wherever beer is sold, instead of having to purchase them at a liquor store as they have in the past.

This is because the commission also voted to expand its definition of beer from malt beverages with 5 percent alcohol by weight or less, to include beverages with 5-8 percent alcohol by weight to match the state definition that Tennessee lawmakers changed in 2014.
