The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team shook off the rust of not playing for more than a week to sweep a low-scoring doubleheader against Eastern Kentucky University, 2-1 and 2-0 on Sunday at Jim Frost Stadium.
The games were scheduled to replace the Frost Classic, which was canceled due to inclement weather. Game three of the series with EKU (3-7) is at noon today.
The Mocs (11-1) won thanks to stellar pitching from Mariah Ramirez and Celie Hudson, who threw complete games. Ramirez improved to 4-0, allowing two hits and striking out five batters in game one, while Hudson also earned her fourth win by allowing four hits and striking out five in the shutout.
UTC trailed in game one after Eastern Kentucky’s Destinee Lizzmore hit a solo home run in the sixth inning. The Mocs rallied to win it in the seventh with three walks and pinch-hitter Katie Corum’s one-out single that drove in Taylor Chadwick and Kacie Lynch.
Southeast Whitfield graduate Sidney Swantic was 2-for-3 to lead a six-hit UTC attack in the game.
