After serving four years with Hamilton County Schools, most recently as interim superintendent, Nakia Towns will be leaving the district and the city.
Towns announced her departure in a Tuesday video by the district welcoming Superintendent Justin Robertson, who was appointed last month.
“I have had the privilege of serving Hamilton County Schools for the past four years, and I will be forever grateful as I leave the district and Chattanooga to pursue new opportunities,” Towns said in the video.
She did not elaborate on what her future plans were in the video and did not respond to an interview request Wednesday afternoon.

Towns took over as interim superintendent after former Superintendent Bryan Johnson left in August to join the leadership team at trucking and logistics company U.S. Xpress.
Towns first joined the district’s leadership team in 2017 as chief of staff before becoming deputy superintendent.

She had made it clear that she would not pursue the permanent superintendent role, as school board policy states that the interim superintendent will not be eligible for the permanent role unless the board makes an exception.
“Thank you, Dr. Towns, for your commitment to our children and your leadership as interim superintendent as you led the district through this transition,” Robertson said in the video. “I am honored to be the next superintendent and look forward to working with our community to move our district forward.”
Towns was a finalist for a superintendent job in Louisiana in 2020 and Florida in 2021.
